Description
Every year, the coats of arms of the elected student government were painted on the walls of the Archiginnasio, the old headquarters of the University of Bologna. Among the approximately five thousand coats of arms still visible in the building, the coats of arms of students from the Kingdom of Hungary, Croatia and Transylvania have survived - intact or in fragments - from the period between 1575 and 1684. This volume describes the coat-of-arms memories of forty-four students, which enriches the history of Hungarian heraldry with several hitherto unknown coats of arms, and provides interesting additions about the use and variants of the already known coats of arms. In addition to the photograph and description of the coats of arms, it provides information on the making of coats of arms depictions and, based largely on new research findings, describes the biographies and family histories of coats of arms owners and the heraldic historical context of each coat of arms. The presentation of the Bologna heraldic relics was made not only for researchers of heraldry, university history, art history, and general cultural history, but also for a wider audience interested in heraldry and Hungarian relics in Italy. The visitor intending to see the Hungarian-related coats of arms will be assisted in navigating the building by the map provided in the appendix.
